Established in 1992, the museum has 25 exhibits – steam locomotives, electric locomotives and wagons. All exhibits are located in Dej Depot, 60 km from Cluj. The oldest exhibit is the rack and pinion steam locomotive, manufactured in Austria in 1908. Also exposed here is the most powerful steam locomotive built in Romania, a unique piece in the country, as well as the first electric locomotive manufactured for the Romanian Railways, in 1973, in a factory in former Yugoslavia.

The museum is organized in the open air, the entrance is free, most of the exhibits can be seen from above, from a footbridge that crosses the Dej-Triaj depot.
